PowerPoint

Today's assignment was to create a PowerPoint that address one or more problematic content standards or topics in my teaching field.  I created an account with Dropbox, and placed my presentation in to my public folder, inside the Dropbox icon on my computer. I had to use Jing to capture my picture.

I taught English self-contained and collaborate.  My students were visual learners.  Each week I distributed a vocabulary list.  Students created flashcards.  I utilized PowerPoints as a visual learning review before vocabulary quizzes.  Each slide contained a part of the speech, picture, and definition. I enjoyed the creativity of making PowerPoints. As the students got comfortable with my PowerPoints, they created their own PowerPoints and presented to the class.  This helped strengthen their oral presentation skills.  Click on the link to view my Powerpoint presentation http://dl.dropbox.com/u/109186781/Lesson%202%20Vocab%20Review.ppt

Google Earth

This assignment was to explore Google Earth.  I installed Google Earth, typed in my address and viewed my home. I could not tell if it was a low or high resolution.  I entered Taj Mahal and captured and saved image.

I visit Google Earth for Educators and found lesson plan "Postcards from the Past using Google Earth Tools".

What is a KML file?  A KML file is a Keyhole Markup Language, an XML based file that expresses geographic annotation and visualization for earth viewing software.

BatchGeo

Part I - Document sharing with Google Docs.  The class was instructed to check their email to see if you required a document sharing invitation.  If so, "excel_example.xls" will appear.  My professor create a shared document on excel spreadsheet for name, address, city, state, zipcode, and email address.  I entered accordingly.

  • Click on Map It.  Once the map appeared I click on the save button.
  • Titled map - Class Map
  • Made it public
  • Entered y Gmail address
  • Save map
Although this was a fun activity, I got repeated error messages. Therefore, I had to use Jing for my image.

Jing Image

Today’s assignment was to create a image on Jing http://www.techsmith.com/jing-features.html.  This was my first time using Jing.  I click on the capture button, drag, and capture image.  Then insert text, and saved document.

If you want to view, just click on history. I save the image to my computer/pictures and upload onto my blogg.

I learned that Jing is a good tool for visual learners.  It also provides students hands-on experience.

Here a copy of my image, What is a Short Story?

DIIGO

I never heard of DIIGO. This was my first time using DIIGO http://www.diigo.com/index and http://www.diigo.com/tools/diigolet. It's a powerful research tool and knowledge sharing community. I was concerned when the security button popped up.
  1. Describe the 3 steps to recommend in the film to get started social bookmarking?  The three steps are research, share, and collaborate.  The three steps are (1) highlight and annotate pages directly on the web, (2) bookmark for easily retrieval later, and (3) tagging.
  2. Describe is Web 2.0, and how it differs from previous stages of the web? This can be an interactive slide show.  Organize, share and display your work and help you to connect with various people all over the web.  You are limited with others.
  3. What is social bookmarking and what advantages does social bookmarking offer that traditional storage and retrieval of web sites does not? Social bookmarking can benefit other teachers.  They can use your sites whereas other web sites are not accessible for your peers for usage.
  4. Did you get your add on to work?  No, I did not get to add on to my work, because I had problems with signing on and will continue to try again.  I got the opportunity to view the video.
  5. What browser do you use? I currently use Internet Explorer. What is a browser add on? A browser add-on is when you click and add-on for quick access.  Give an example and explain why they are useful (if they are useful Which ones have you used? For example: weather and news.  What browser add-ons are you currently using?  I utilize the weather constantly for weather update.
  6. What ISTE NETS T or NETS A (ED. Leadership) standard would you consider this activity most closely matches and why? I would consider this as NETS because it allow students to use technology collaboratively with their peers to prepare for the future.

Self Portrait - Picasso

by Anonymous: Picassohead
Today I created a self portrait image http://www.picassohead.com/create.html
in the style of Pablo Picasso by Anonymous: Picassohead

I learned that this tool can be very helpful for general and student special needs students.  Guidance Counselors and Case Managers can utilize this tool for students to express their feelings, or thoughts, etc.

This activity will improve my professional knowledge base by allowing to utilize this tool for students to express themselves. Some students are very good artist, and others are not.

I can utilize this tool in my class for drawing and creating images, especially for students who require hand-on activities.

This activity does relate to the ISTE NETS T and/or State Tech Standards because school districts are utilizing more technology to advance and prepare students for the future.  Example:  laptops usage in the classrooms

Snipping Tool

I taught vocabulary English 9 self-contained.  Students received ten words at the beginning of the week.  This picture describes the word annals (noun) chronological record; historical accounts.  A PowerPoint was created with ten pictures as a visual learning tool.

Google Docs Resume - August 31, 2012

https://docs.google.com/a/su.edu/document/d/1N7nCM9pVPriOqHfN1B8WNFw-WdvYdqbgXw4GB0zMCl0/edit

I completed my resume on 8/31/12 on Google docs, but did not post to my blog. This was a challenge for me because I have my resume already typed on Microsoft Word document.  I tried to download, but that did not work.  Therefore, I had to copy and paste into Google docs.

The advantage for this assignment will help students with learning other techniques to utilize documents.  I will share with other teachers. The disadvantage if students are not familiar with Google docs, it can be a challenge.
