Millennial

This assignment was to determine, how millennial are you?  I took the millennial quiz pewresearch.org/millennials/.   I scored 67/100 on the Pew Research Center.

What implications does your profile have for your teaching and your students’ learning? My score was 67. Where are you in terms of the Frand’s 10 characteristics of the information-age mind set? I prefer Typing Rather than Handwriting.  List the 10 characteristics and report where you are for each one:
  1. Computers Aren’t Technology –  I'm in and I utilize the Internet, the Web, computer, and cellular telephone.
  2. Internet Better Than TV – I'm in and during my spare time, and I am on the Internet more than watching TV or sometimes both.
  3. Reality No longer Real - I'm in and I agree with the statement, "Believe none of what you hear, and none of what you see." Things have changed over the years.  It's easy to duplicate.
  4. Doing Rather Than Knowing - I'm out on Doing Rather than Knowing.
  5. Nintendo over Logic - I'm out on Nintendo over Logic.
  6. Multitasking Way of Life – I'm in and multitask daily.
  7. Typing Rather than Handwriting – I'm in and rather type rather than write. Technology has changed me in this area. It's faster for me.
  8. Staying Connected – I'm in and stay connected with cellar telephone, computer, laptop, and my Kindle
  9. Zero Tolerance for Delays - I'm in and have a zero tolerance for delays.
  10. Consumer/Creator - I'm out on Consumer/Creator.
Are you in? I am in.  Are you out? On somethings, I'm out.  If out, why? I'm out because I have seen so many things happened over the years.  Is it important to be in? It is so important to be in because the millennial is technology driven  Can the lack of an information age mind set be spell doom for us? It can be to a certain destinct. If you are teaching have a student(s)take take the millennial test and compare, or have a family member from another generation (child, parent) take the survey and see how their scores vary from yours. I am not teaching, but I got my husband and some of his co-workers to take the quiz.  My husband scored 5,  co-worker #1 scored 50, co-worker #2 scored 36, and co-worker #3 scored 27.  As you can see, one co-worker is at the half way point. I advised each of them to work on improving their scores.

Voki - Self Introduction

This assignment was to create a self introduction though Voki.  First, I turned on readability statistics on Word.  This allowed me to verify my word count of 85 or less.  Second, I create an account with www.voki.com and selected a character, change features, hair, nose, clothes, etc. I inserted text for recording. Lastly, I shared and post the link to my blog.  Click on link to view my self introduction.  www.voki.com/pickup.php?scid=7054190&height=267&width=200. Students will like Voki.  It's fun and creatative.  Wonderful for hands-on activities!

Word Clouds

This assignment was to create a word cloud.  Word clouds are great for visual learners.  Our department chair created last name word clouds for the teachers last spring. It was excited to see our names in the word clouds.  We post in our classrooms for display.  I would use word clouds for weekly vocabulary and short stories.

Carpe Diem - Google Drive

This assignment was to listen to a short 25 minutes webinar and answer the following question listed below.

1. How prepared for you to engage in each type of learning (Carpe Diem vs St. Marys)? I am prepared to engaged in both types of learning with CarpeDiemSchools.com and www.smriders.net.  Course 585 Educational Technology Applications has enhance my technology skills to implement additional technology skills for students.

2. Provide specific examples including devices and apps or software, of what you are currently    doing in each model if you are teaching.  I am currently not teaching.

3. If you not in the class now, what would you suggest teachers in your field adopt based on current knowledge of mobile/wireless devices. I would suggest to teachers if permitted by your administrative team to utilize Smartphones.  School districts should consider investing in Android Tablets.  They are becoming very popular in the technology world.

4. What would you recommend in terms of a school wide initiative to improve teaching and learning at this point if you were in a position to do so? I would recommend that teachers incorporate more technology in the classrooms.

5. A mixture of the 2 models (Carpe Diem vs St. Marys) is probably in everyone’s future. How do you see executing your version of the blend in your field?  I see myself being flexible with both models.

I learned that technology will become the future for teaching our students.   There are some school districts with available funds who implement technology daily.  They understand students are more involve in technology.

If you view some of the Vtech, a electronic learning toy company, they are making learning from birth to 8 years old fun to learn.  Therefore, kids learn how to operate technology, and have fun at the same time.

Rubistar

This activity was to create a rubric.  First, I registered on rubistar.4teachers.org, choose a customizable rubric,  created and edit rubic/category, click submit, download as excel spreadsheet, and post to my blog.

Rubrics are great tools to help teachers grade students for various assignments.

Prezi

This assignment was to create a Prezi.com presentation.  First, I created a Prezi account, clicked on buttons to inserted text, and images.  Students in my English 9 collaborative class created a Prezi presentation.  They enjoyed this activity.  It was a challenge for them, but they accomplished and presented to the class.

How was this assignment different? This assignment was different because it required working with various buttons. How is the same? It was the same were you learned hands on experience with various buttons. Is it better? It was better for me because my students have already experience this assignment.  Is it worse? No, it's not the worse, but the zebra tool may be a challenge.  Why? Students like to work with hands on tools.  This was one of those tools where students can learned and be creative.  Advantages? The advantages are hands on experience and creativity.  Disadvantages? The disadvantage may be for students who do not like to be creative or hands on.   ISTE NETS T - This addressed the standards for learning, leading and teaching in the digital age with creativity, and online learning.

Photostory

Today’s assignment was to create a Photostory.  I created an account with Pecha Kucha, www.pecha-kucha.org/presentations/, build my presentation in PowerPoint and saved as jpg.  This turned my slides into images.  Next I download Photstory, imported my images, and set the motion and duration to 20 seconds per slide.  I have two or more slides that would not remain on 20 seconds, but everything still worked accordingly. I had problems with my video. My students would like this assignment.  Enjoy!

PowerPoint

Today's assignment was to create a PowerPoint that address one or more problematic content standards or topics in my teaching field.  I created an account with Dropbox, and placed my presentation in to my public folder, inside the Dropbox icon on my computer. I had to use Jing to capture my picture.

I taught English self-contained and collaborate.  My students were visual learners.  Each week I distributed a vocabulary list.  Students created flashcards.  I utilized PowerPoints as a visual learning review before vocabulary quizzes.  Each slide contained a part of the speech, picture, and definition. I enjoyed the creativity of making PowerPoints. As the students got comfortable with my PowerPoints, they created their own PowerPoints and presented to the class.  This helped strengthen their oral presentation skills.  Click on the link to view my Powerpoint presentation http://dl.dropbox.com/u/109186781/Lesson%202%20Vocab%20Review.ppt

  • Click on Map It.  Once the map appeared I click on the save button.
  • Titled map - Class Map
  • Made it public
  • Entered y Gmail address
  • Save map
Although this was a fun activity, I got repeated error messages. Therefore, I had to use Jing for my image.
